The Meaning of Aging

Hello Class, my name is Genesis. I was born and raised in Atlanta, GA. Another fun fact about myself is that I have an almost 1 year old baby. My experience with older adults is slim to none, other than personal experience with my grandmother, From taking this course, I hope to gain an understanding of the process and changes of aging. I would hope to learn about myths and truths of aging.

When I consider myself old, I envision being the age of 60. I believe I will look amazing, however not feel so great. I imagine my body being limited and sensitive to loud noises. My health will be okay, however not the best. I believe as we mature in life, we should frequently have health and wellness checks. I always hear adults complaining about there sore limbs, tiredness, and unavailability to participate in events. While experiencing this,I envision me spending my time on the beach. This would offer me a relaxed setting with calm noises of water and waves. I believe things such as quietness, family time, and daily views of the life that I have built will provide me pleasure.

While considering aging, I fear having to depend on a caretaker for basic duties, such as using the restroom. This issue concerns me, because I am an independent. As I age, I would have to rely on others to perform simple task for myself, such as eating, showering, and moving. These are activities that I am able to do as I please. Going from independency to dependency would be hard to adapt to.

    Genesis,

Thank you for sharing your experiences and thoughts. We all appreciate it. And while you experience with your grandparents may not be extensive, you have a unique perspective because you have a relationship with them. We will spend a great deal of time on the myths of aging – both in Cruikshank and Aronson. I think you will appreciate both texts in terms of the information they share and approaches they take to aging.

My sincere hope is that you continue to feel great at 60!! Many older adults feel great long into their 70s. While there may be more issues or challenges to face, that doesn’t take away the great feeling of life. And sometimes older adults just like to tell you about their aches and pains.

Being dependent in your elderhood is a really important issue for many people. I think if you take a look at how Cruikshank starts her book, you can get a different take on that issue.

I look forward to many conversations.

    Dr P
